Artificial intelligence can be defined as the ability for a machine to perform, under variable and unpredictable circumstances and without significant human supervision, tasks that usually require human intelligence, including learning, perception, interaction, problem-solving, language comprehension, and logical reasoning.
Artificial intelligence is at the heart of contemporary concerns. It affects all fields, and education is no exception. What can education research say about this? There is already a certain amount of research on AI in education. However, the field is constantly evolving as innovations multiply, uses expand and diversify, awareness deepens, experience accumulates, and maturity grows, which continually renews perspectives. The aim of this book is to present an international collection of contributions from educational researchers, taking this evolution into account.
Contributions were invited to take stock of the state of the links between AI and education; to present facts, and experiences; to analyse challenges; to identify opportunities and possible futures. Authors are invited to address any aspect of the wide range of issues related to “Education and AI”, including the use of AI in education or the role of education in the development of AI. How does AI affect learning and educational contents, objectives, processes, practice, research, theory, administration, and policy? Is the way we use AI beneficial or detrimental? Is it relevant? Can it be improved? What can we say based on field experience? How does AI affect the teaching work and the teaching profession? And more broadly, how does AI change work in the education sector? How does it affect the whole sector from every angle? Or not.
Every contribution in the field and all researchers interested in education were welcome. Both primary research papers (whether speculative, theoretical, conceptual, methodological, or empirical, including case studies) and literature reviews were acceptable.
The main stages of the project are as follows:
